How to Prevent Windows Updates
Stop Windows Update Service (Temporary Solution)
This method pauses updates but won't prevent them permanently.
- Press Win + R, type
services.msc
, and hit Enter.
- Find Windows Update in the list.
- Right-click on it → Properties.
- Change Startup type to Disabled.
- Click Stop, then Apply and OK.
This prevents Windows from downloading updates, but it might reset after a restart.
Set Up a Metered Connection (For Wi-Fi Users)
Windows won’t download major updates on a metered connection.
- Press Win + I to open Settings → Go to Network & Internet.
- Click Wi-Fi → Select your connected network.
- Scroll down and enable Set as metered connection.
This works only for Wi-Fi networks, not Ethernet.
Use Group Policy Editor (Pro & Enterprise Versions Only)
- Press Win + R, type
gpedit.msc
, and hit Enter.
- Navigate to:
Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → Windows Update
- Double-click Configure Automatic Updates.
- Select Disabled, click Apply, then OK.
This completely stops automatic updates.
Block Updates via Registry (For Home Edition)
- Press Win + R, type
regedit
, and hit Enter.
- Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
- If the WindowsUpdate or AU key is missing, create it manually.
- Right-click inside the AU folder → New → DWORD (32-bit) Value.
- Name it NoAutoUpdate and set its value to 1.
- Restart your PC.
This stops updates permanently unless manually re-enabled.
Disable Windows Update via Registry Hack
- Open
regedit
and go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv
- Find Start, double-click it, and set the value to 4.
- Restart your PC.
This completely disables Windows Update.
Important Notes: Stopping updates permanently is risky, as you won’t get security fixes. If you ever need to install updates manually, go to Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates.
